Russell Gunn - Ethnomusicology Volume 1 (1999)

" Crossover recordings run an extraordinary risk of failing, or at least flailing. Russell Gunn's avoids the former fate and, by and large, also escapes the latter. .... with Ethnomusicology, Vol. 1 , Gunn's ensemble crosses the wires of hip-hop and postbop coming up with a slinky funk feel but keeping a strong neobop improvisational vibe heavy ... the album was nominated for Grammy award in 2000". Russell Gunn - Mood Swings (2003)

Russell Gunn known primarily for his trumpet playing and Grammy nominated recording, "Ethnomusicology vol. 1". Russell grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois playing trumpet, and his initial musical interest was hip hop with LL Cool J being his first music idol.
"Mood Swings" is a rather unusual set (trumpet plus organ trio) with Gunn on trumpet, Radam Schwartz on Hammond B3, Eric Johnson on guitar and Cecil Brooks III on drums. Russell's trumpet, to say the least, swings and blends flawlessly with the set.
