Peter Epstein/Brad Shepik/Matt Kilmer - Lingua Franca (2005)

A terific album from 2005. It was recorded live with no overdubs nor anything else by alto/soprano saxophonist Peter Epstein, guitarist Brad Shepik and percussionist Matt Kilmer. Here's a review by Mr. Scott Yanow:
" ... This unusual trio, comprised of altoist Peter Epstein (occasionally doubling on soprano), guitarist Brad Shepik, and percussionist Matt Kilmer, works quite well, sounding very complete. Epstein is generally melodic, Shepik's versatility and wide range of sounds are major assets, and Kilmer keeps the backgrounds colorful. Some of the playing hints at world music and one number has a reggae rhythm, but the music overall is modern post-bop jazz, with each of the musicians being of equal importance. There are no dull or predictable moments along the way and this sparse format brings out the best in all three players ..."

Will Calhoun - Native Lands (2005)

Better known as the drummer for Living Colour, Will Calhoun's solo projects differ significantly from his work with the hard rocking band; here exploring on world beats and jazz, he shows his jazz chops playing with some musicians from various musical styles that include Pharoah Sanders, Wallace Roney, Stanley Jordan,Marcus Miller, Nana Vasconcelos, Mos Def, Orrin Evans, John Benitez, and Kevin Eubanks. Pharoah Sanders appears in five tracks (1,2,3,4 and 7) and in four of them trumpeter Wallace Roney also joins in.

Stuff - Live at Montreux (1976)

Killer live work from Stuff -- recorded beautifully here as Stuff’s shifting personnel had solidified by the time it played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976 .The musicians were Cornell Dupree on guitar, Gordon Edwards on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Eric Gale on guitar and Richard Tee on keyboards.

Note: This is the DVD version without markers for 61.47 mins.

Stuff - More Stuff (1977)

"Stuff's sophomore album More Stuff was quite similar to its first LP. Once again, the band offered a pleasant and good-natured, if unremarkable, blend of jazz, R&B, and pop. Many jazz critics gave this record negative reviews, attacking it for being commercial and groove-oriented. But Stuff never claimed to be Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and tunes like Eric Gale's "Honey Coral Rock" and Cornell Dupree's "Subway" weren't meant to be straight-ahead bop. Stuff wanted to attract R&B and pop fans as well as jazz fans, and its members would have been happy to learn that someone who was into Marvin Gaye and Tyrone Davis also appreciated More Stuff. ...."(AllMusic)

Mike Mainieri - Love Play (1977)

Mike Manieri is probably one of the premier vibes players we do not often heard of. He played for a long time with Buddy Rich (1956 - 1963) and also for the ever evolving jazz fusion group Step head ( Michael Brecker, Steve Gadd, Mike Stern were among the most notable members). He also appeared on Dire Strait's "Love over Gold" album. Love play was orginally released in 1977 and this is the 2007 reissued version. Personnel in the session include: Michael Brecker, David Sanborn, Don Grolnick, David Spinozza, Tony Levin, Steve Gadd and others.

I. Stuff (1976)

Stuff was a New-York based jazz funk band active in the late 1970s and early 1980s with members among the finest session musicians in the New York studio music scene at that time . The members were Gordon Edwards (bass), the late Richard Tee (keyboards), the late Eric Gale (guitar), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Chris Parker (drums), and later Steve Gadd (drums). These are their self -titled debut and third release respectively.

Ecstasy in Numbers -The Search (2003)

Ecstasy In Numbers is a Seattle based jazz fusion trio - Garey Williams (drums), Mike Mattingly (guitar), and Dean Schmidt (bass); and it only take a few seconds to realize that this is a skilled triumvirate. "The Search" is their second album with progressive jazz/rock composition that are quite accessible in the same vein as Yellowjacket, Steve Khan, or Holdsworth.

Chris Beckers - Nightcruising (2003)

The Dutch born producer, composer and jazz fusion guitarist Chris Beckers has released more than 10 albums and has worked and toured promoting his albums with some of the finest Jazz musician such Ernie Watts, Billy Cobham Jimmy Haslip , Paulinho da Costa, Saskia Laroo to name a few dating way back to the 1980's. 'Nightcruising' released in 2003 provides a decent overview of his recording history.
On May 2009 he released his latest album "Seven Frames Of Mind" which features Jimmy Haslip (bass) and Simon Phillips (drums) plus some of the finest European Jazz musicians like Jasper van't Hof (keyboards), Eric Vloeimans (trumpet), Tony Lakatos (tenor sax) and Mike del Ferro (electric piano).
