" A stripped-down set with a very classic feel -- one that not only features some great tenor by leader Nat Simpkins, but also some especially nice work on Hammond from the under-recorded Gloria Coleman! ... the record also features Cecil Brooks III on drums and Russell Malone on guitar.. "

Excellent stuff,Coleman very under recorded as you state,Malone very talented.Thanks.
thanks a lot GREAT record, very enjoyable
glad you like it !
Thanks for sharing this groover!
I like the warmth of Simpkins sound, and also the fact that he does not try to overplay/impress play. Straight ahead good jazz with lots of feelings.
And it's great to see that Gloria Coleman hasn't lost anything during 30 years since her little gem with Grant Green: Soul Sister, recorded 1963. Actually she has developed quite a bit as a jazz organ player. She has broadened her repertoire technically and has a more confident approach, wich means she sounds both better and more relaxed.
I must also say that I really like her drawbar registrations! E.g. her sound in 'Shuffle the deck' between 2m37s and 3m28s.
This record is well produced regarding sound, and the so difficult to get it right organ is captured very well. No loss of deep bass, and no muddieness or overuse of reverb. The sound engineer knew his profession.
This is a great record!
