Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone - Face To Face (1995)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A premier jazz musician in Japan, Makoto Ozone has made a successful transition to America, where he became equally prominent in USA. He began on organ at four, then took up piano as a teenager. He went to Berklee in 1980 and studied composing and arranging. He was noticed by Gary Burton and later recorded with him and was part of his band. Ozone's striking ability especially on mid-tempo pieces) and impressive technique made him a big hit at the Kool Jazz Festival. His 1984 debut recording featured Burton and bassist Eddie Gomez. It was a stunning example of complete knowledge and mastery of the full jazz piano spectrum. Makoto Ozone was 21 when he joined Gary Burtons's band in 1984, and " ...they seem to practically read each other's minds when they played together".

V.A - Jazz Club - Great Vibes ! (2007)

A tidy selection of the masters including some of non-American artists/recordings that really expand the selection past the obvious; from Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Roy Ayers, Gary Burton or Dave Pike to Belgian Fats Sadi or Germany's Gunter Hampel to name a few.

Stefon Harris - African Tarantella:Dances with Duke (2006)

With such an album cover frankly I always freaked out everytime I put this on, but nonetheless this is a fine album as he enters the traditional jazz territory with tribute to Duke Ellington. See here for review.

Steve Nelson - Sound Effect (2007)

Photobucket

Steve Nelson has been quite visible as the vibraphonist in Dave Holland's Quintet and Big Band since the mid-'90s, yet has had surprisingly few opportunities to record as a leader. Having paid his dues as a sideman going back to the 1970s and several high quality though not too succesful releases, this one (Sound Effect) finally get him to move center-stage for good. He teamed up with such veterans as Mulgrew Miller on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums! give it a try if you like jazz vibraphone/piano quartets or just enjoy good jazz played by the masters.
