Mark Elf - Glad to Be Back (2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A bop-based guitarist, Mark Elf attended Berklee (1969-1971), picked up experience playing with a who's who of modern mainstream jazz (including Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Branford Marsalis, and Slide Hampton), and has recorded as a sideman with Lou Donaldson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Wynton Marsalis, and others. On Glad to Be Back Mark Elf returns from a bout with cancer and a relatively long three-year hiatus and he's supported by formidable line-up -- pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash that matches Elf's fleet fingers on the strings.

Hipnosis - Carrousel (2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

" Stunning work from Hipnosis -- an album that's far greater even than their debut -- ands puts Hipnosis at the top of a very elite group of club jazz artists that include Sleepwalker and Nicola Conte! ..... the bulk, but two, of the set is instrumental, taking its energy from rhythmic piano and Fender Rhodes lines, rolling acoustic bass passages, and some especially great angular work on sax and trombone! ..." Stuff - More Stuff (1977)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"Stuff's sophomore album More Stuff was quite similar to its first LP. Once again, the band offered a pleasant and good-natured, if unremarkable, blend of jazz, R&B, and pop. Many jazz critics gave this record negative reviews, attacking it for being commercial and groove-oriented. But Stuff never claimed to be Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and tunes like Eric Gale's "Honey Coral Rock" and Cornell Dupree's "Subway" weren't meant to be straight-ahead bop. Stuff wanted to attract R&B and pop fans as well as jazz fans, and its members would have been happy to learn that someone who was into Marvin Gaye and Tyrone Davis also appreciated More Stuff. ...."(AllMusic)

Doug Carn - Revelation (1973)

" ... A real killer all the way through! The album's a motherlode of righteous jazzy soul -- power-driven by Doug on organ, and peppered wonderfully with vocals by then-wife Jean Carn -- singing in a totally different mode than on her later Philly Soul recordings. The rest of the group includes some great work from Olu Dara on trumpet and Rene McLean on alto -- " Dusty Groove.

DownBeat gives this one 5 stars and Best CD of 2004.

Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone - Face To Face (1995)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A premier jazz musician in Japan, Makoto Ozone has made a successful transition to America, where he became equally prominent in USA. He began on organ at four, then took up piano as a teenager. He went to Berklee in 1980 and studied composing and arranging. He was noticed by Gary Burton and later recorded with him and was part of his band. Ozone's striking ability especially on mid-tempo pieces) and impressive technique made him a big hit at the Kool Jazz Festival. His 1984 debut recording featured Burton and bassist Eddie Gomez. It was a stunning example of complete knowledge and mastery of the full jazz piano spectrum. Makoto Ozone was 21 when he joined Gary Burtons's band in 1984, and " ...they seem to practically read each other's minds when they played together".
